Synopsis
Haunted by their own directionless lives, two pre-adolescent girls reunite while visiting their ailing grandmother. Directors’ Statement
Palácios de pena is about a culturally inherited fear in Portugal, linked to political and social oppression during the Inquisition and Fascism. It revolves around two upper-middle class adolescent Portuguese girls, juxtaposing their budding identities to a trial condemning two Moorish homosexuals to burn at the stake. Their ailing grandmother gives them an awareness of their heritage through the mechanism of desire, describing a dream where she is a judge of the Inquisition. The grandmother’s and the girls’ guilt is complicated by their relationship, that of family and love. As they love each other, so does what they represent: ignorance and the will to violently oppress.

LIBERDADE WINS FILM AND VIDEO PRIZE AT LOCARNO 2011

“Liberdade”, co-directed by Gabriel Abrantes and Benjamin Crotty, was awarded the Film and Video Prize at the Pardi di Domani section after receiving the Restart Award for Best Portuguese Short Film Director at IndieLisboa. For the second time in a row, Abrantes was awarded at Locarno, after receiving the Golden Leopard in 2010 for “A History of Mutual Respect”, also distinguished with the Media Recording Award for Portuguese Best Short Film in IndieLisboa’10.

Liberdade International Premiere at Locarno Film Festival 2011

Liberdade by Gabriel Abrantes and Benjamin Crotty will have it's international premiere at Locarno Film Festival, August 9th, 2011. It was previously shown at Indie Lisboa, where it won the prize of Best Directors in the National Competition.

A film adaptation of William Shakespeare prologue to the Taming of the Shrew, with portuguese dialogue, spoken with the Brazilian accent from Bahia, and filmed in the Lazzio region of Italy.
Uma adaptação do prólogo da “Fera Amansada” de William Shakespeare, com diálogos em português, representado com o sotaque brasileiro da Bahia, e filmado na província de Lazio em Itália.

BABY BACK COSTA RICA
Three teenage girls are heading home in their Mini Cooper S. They discuss their boyfriends, their boyfriend's mothers, their boyfriend's mother's cars, and Judaism. After making pizza they go swim in the pool. This film is part of the sub-genre of horror films where a vehicle is the protagonist, in this case a Mini Cooper S. Pedro Gomes developed an aggressive soundscape, working at the intersection of distorted post-rock guitar with horror film soundtrack tropes. It alternates in between a diagetic (music inside the car) and non-diagetic (music outside the car) register, which proposes it as something the girls consume, as well as something that consumes them, as it distinguishes and allocates them to a specific genre, and class.

Três raparigas estão a ser levadas para casa num Mini Cooper S. Falam sobre os namorados, as mães dos namorados, os carros das mães dos namorados e o judaísmo. Depois de aquecerem umas pizzas, vão nadar na piscina. Este filme faz parte de um sub-género de filmes de terror que se destacam pelo facto do protagonista ser representado por um carro, que é, neste caso, um Mini Cooper S. Pedro Gomes criou uma parede de som agressiva, cruzando guitarra distorcida com mecanismos das bandas sonoras de filmes de terror. O som varia numa relação diegética (musica dentro do carro) e não diegética (musica fora do carro), propondo-a como uma coisa que as teenagers consumem, e ao mesmo tempo uma coisa que as consume, distinguindo-as e as remetendo-as assim para um género e classe específicos.

1 Make it new John (Duncan Campbell) Seamlessly blending archival footage with newly scripted material, Campbell pushes documentary form in his study of John DeLorean’s ill-fated foray into Northern Ireland and the effect his fall from grace had on the local workforce.

2 blue mantle (Rebecca Meyers) A stately, poetic meditation on the ocean, embracing literary, visual, and musical representations of its allure and associated dangers.

3 Forms Are Not Self-Subsistent Substances (Samantha Rebello) Contemplating medieval perception via Aristotelian philosophy, Rebello’s unsettling film blends church bells and grotesque stone carvings with bestiary images and animal flesh in abstracted, tactile close-ups.

4 Visionary Iraq (Gabriel Abrantes and Benjamin Crotty) Abrantes’s transgressive films pull no punches. Here, an incestuous brother-sister duo leave their parents to serve in Iraq, in a melodrama acted with beyond-Kuchar excessiveness exacerbated by unnerving, dubbed dialogue.

5 It, heat, hit (Laure Prouvost) This new video for Tate Britain’s Art Now Lightbox is a sensory overload, featuring direct address, on-screen text, fast cuts, surround sound, and narrative disruption—all delivered with mischievous humor. Passive viewers need not apply.

6 Get Out of the Car (Thom Andersen) In a rejoinder to his monumental Los Angeles Plays Itself, Andersen records the temporary sights of his city, accompanied by a rousing SoCal jukebox. Killer comment from a bystander: “When you make a movie about something, call me.”

7 Brune Renault (Neïl Beloufa) French artist Neïl Beloufa’s filmmaking is a sculptural practice, in terms of building both sets and viewing situations. In his latest effort, four young actors play out clichéd scenes around a quartered Renault, which allows “impossible” camera movements while the production process is laid bare.

8 Sugar Slim Says (Lewis Klahr) Klahr shifts up a gear, trading his characteristically nostalgic collage palette for imagery from contemporary graphic novels, toeing the urban hard line with two knockout, sleazy tunes by Marc Anthony Thompson.

9 Journal and Remarks (David Gatten) Gatten measures a latter-day journey to the Galápagos against Darwin’s historic voyage, cutting views of the islands with pages from evolutionary texts at exacting twenty-nine-frame intervals.

10 Perfumed Nightmare (Kidlat Tahimik) Revived by Ben Rivers for a screening at Whitechapel Gallery in relation to his own forthcoming film The Other Side of Nowhere, Filipino filmmaker Kidlat Tahimik’s 1977 feature (his first) is an absolute joy to behold. Fresh, insightful, and completely life-affirming—a welcome antidote to the ironic, cynical pastiches that dominate so much contemporary art.

GABRIEL ABRANTES

Nasce em Chapel Hill no estado da Carolina do Norte nos Estados Unidos em 1984. Entre 2002 e 2006 realiza o BA em Cinema e Artes Plásticas no Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, em Nova Iorque. Em 2005/2006 estuda na L’Ecole National des Beaux-Arts, em Paris e em 2007 frequenta o mestrado no Le Fresnoy – Studio Mational des Arts Contemporains, em Tourcoing, França. Ganhou o Prémio EDP de 2009 com o projecto Too Many Daddies, Mommies and Babies. Realizador de Visionary Iraq que ganhou o Prémio Jovens Talento no Indie Lisboa 2009, e A History of Mutual Respect, que ganhou o Prémio de Melhor Curta Metragem Internacional no Festival de Filme de Locarno 2010 e o Prémio de Melhor Curta Metragem Nacional no Indie Lisboa 2010.

DANIEL SCHMIDT

Nasce em New Haven no estado Connecticut nos Estados Unidos em 1984. Vive e trabalha em Brooklyn e Los Angeles. Estudou Cinema e Televisão na Tish School of the Arts, Nova Iorque (2002-2006) assim como na Universidade de Yale (2004). O seu filme “For Crying Out Loud”, um melodrama de uma hora dividido em três partes, foi exibido em diversos festivais de cinema. Desde então tem participado em vários trabalhos como “Teen Opera” um episódio piloto com Katie Widloski; “A History of Mutual Respect” uma curta-metragem com Gabriel Abrantes que veio a ganhar o Prémio de Melhor Curta Metragem Internacional no Festival de Filme de Locarno 2010 e o Prémio de Melhor Curta Metragem Nacional no Indie Lisboa 2010 e “Big Hug”, uma longa com Widloski e Abrantes.

NATXO CHECA
Iniciou a sua actividade profissional no início dos anos noventa. Desde 1994, no contexto da ZDB que co-dirige, ou do Festival Atlântico que dirigiu, mostra em Lisboa uma parte significativa da produção artística visual emergente portuguesa. Em simultâneo organiza mostras e intercâmbios internacionais em algumas Capitais Europeias e na Costa Oeste Americana com artistas da geração de noventa. A partir de 2001, inicia uma relação mais profunda com alguns artistas, envolvendo a curadoria, a produção e a mostra individual. No âmbito das actividades da ZDB e com uma serie de parcerias institucionais de relevo, prepara para o segundo semestre de 2009 o ano zero de um centro de residências internacionais de formação avançada sedeado em Lisboa. Paralelamente à sua actividade principal, aceita frequentemente convites de estruturas de ensino artístico, para leccionar estágios na área da programação, da produção artística e da curadoria.

A Mutual Respect é uma empresa de produção estabelecida em 2010 em Lisboa por Gabriel Abrantes, Natxo Checa e pela ZDB. A History of Mutual Respect venceu na secção de curtas-metragens. O Palmarés do festival é anunciado esta noite.


Gabriel Abrantes e Daniel Schmidt vão receber esta noite em Locarno, por A History of Mutual Respect, o Leopardo de Ouro para a melhor curta-metragem na secção Pardi di domani (Leopardos de Amanhã), confirmou Abrantes ao Ípsilon.

Dedicada a novos talentos, a secção incluiu curtas de realizadores que nunca realizaram uma longa-metragem e em anteriores edições exibiu os primeiros filmes de Fatih Akin, Paul Thomas Anderson, Laurent Cantet, François Ozon....

A History of Mutual Respect já tinha vencido o ultimo IndieLisboa. Na altura, escrevemos sobre este filme rodado "numa utopia artificial - Brasília - e na eloquência do natural: as cataratas de Iguaçu. É nesse cenário 'herzoguiano' que se revela a natureza de dois rapazes de raça brança fascinados, dizem eles, pela pureza da mestiçagem - na pele de uma rapariga de Iguaçu. A coisa acaba próxima da escravidão, num palacete lisboeta."
